Fed: ACTU refuses to rule out industrial campaign at Qantas
The ACTU has criticised a plan by Qantas to replace permanent staff with casuals.
The airline wants to increase the proportion of casual employees to up to 25 per centof the workforce.
ACTU president GREG COMBET says this means up to 8,000 permanent Qantas workers wouldbe replaced by casuals.
Mr COMBET also claims Qantas managers have told unions the real intention of the airlineis to increase the percentage of casual employees to 45 per cent of the workforce.
He says the effect would be increased security risks, lower staff morale and decreasedproductivity.
Qantas' Melbourne airport operations have been hit by two snap strikes by baggage handlersthis week, over the presence of casual labour hire workers.
Mr COMBET says he believes most Australians will understand why the ACTU and the 10Qantas unions will fight the casualisation plan.
