Qld: Sports Minister Bob Gibbs quits politics = 2

Queensland Premier Peter Beattie announced Mr Gibbs would fill one of three newly created
positions as a Special Trade and Investment Commissioner, representing the state in the
United States.

Mr Gibbs will take up his new $US65,000 ($A99,510) a year job in January.

Former National Party Premier Mike Ahern will fill a second Queensland-based commissioner's
position, developing trade opportunities in the Middle East, India and Africa.

Mr Beattie is negotiating with a third high-profile Queenslander to fill the remaining
commissioner's spot.

The results of those negotiations will not be announced until after that person has
spoken to their family.

Local Government and Information Minister Terry Mackenroth took over Mr Gibbs' portfolios
this afternoon, ahead of a caucus ballot on Thursday.

Mr Beattie confirmed Mr Gibbs' departure would create a "minor" cabinet reshuffle and
a by-election.
