NSW: US mad cow outbreak proves value of e-tagging

The New South Wales government says a mad cow disease outbreak crippling the US cattle
industry shows why New South Wales farmers should adopt a scheme to e-tag cattle.

More than 25,000 beef producers and around 1,460 dairy producers in New South Wales
will be forced to fix electronic ear tags to hundreds of head of cattle under a draft
National Livestock Identification System.

The New South Wales Farmers' Association has said it won't support the plan unless
the government offers to subsidise it.

Agriculture Minister IAN MCDONALD says the scheme -- released a fortnight ago -- will
help find the point of contamination in the event of a local mad cow disease outbreak.

He says the mad cow disease scare in North America reinforces how economically paralysing
contamination can be.
